Thatch is the organic build up of dead and organic material in grass lawns. Thatch builds up when the turf produces a lot of organic debris at a much faster pace than they naturally break down. Although, thatch is not completely bad and is part of the natural cycle of the turf, it still have to be kept under control. Uncontrolled thatch can also lead to disease in plants and insects which will further increase the use of pesticides. One of the main process of aeration involves puncturing the ground with small holes which will help the soil to breath and easy absorption of water. Aeration will also help the roots to grow longer and deeper. Aeration will prevent the soil to get compacted and compressed. The sub-soil is usually compacted especially during the construction phase of the lawn. In parks and public places the soil can easily get compacted if kids and pets run and walk on turf.
